We know that sometimes these first “date” things can get a little awkward but let us help you make it a win everytime! We have all of your first date needs under one roof.
1. Bowling, duh! Way better than awkwardly staring at each other over some half baked spaghetti!
2. Drinks. Is he or she a beer lover of a whisky on the rocks type? We've got you covered from can beers to delicate wines.
3. Food. What's more romantic than brick oven pizza and tots?
4. Arcade games. Old school and classic first date vibe. Plus, you can teach your new friend how to hold a pool stick!
5. Groovy tunes. Perfect way to set the mood!
Ok and let’s be honest, you and your date are probably not the best bowlers in the city, right? There’s a certain playful energy that comes with competing at something you both aren’t very good at and you shouldn't underestimate the power of a post-strike hi-five!
You'll never run out of things to do as the night goes on and if all else fails and you can't imagine spending one more second with your first date, we have the friendliest bartenders in the city to help you take the edge off.
See you soon lovers!
A few other neat tidbits about our favorite sport :
Modern bowling is a 10-pin game. 9-pin bowling remains outlawed in all US states except for Texas, due to the fact that it used to be associated with illegal gambling.
Bowling balls were made of wood until 1905. The 1960s brought us the colorful polyester resin balls that we continue to use today—in between, bowling balls were simply heavy black rubber.
The oldest written account of bowling comes to us from one of King Edward the III of England’s decrees: he banned his soldiers from bowling, so that they would focus on archery practice.
A bowling ball only hits four pins for an “ideal” strike. Therefore, if you roll l a perfect 300 game, your ball hits as few as 48 pins.
Not only does bowling have a rich background, it’s also a surprisingly good source of exercise : bowling burns up to 180 calories in the course of three games. Throwing frames also works underused muscle groups, can improve your social life, and even reduce your risk of heart disease and diabetes. All-around win, if you ask us!
Get on down to South Bowl and indulge your inner bowling nerd—if you know any more interesting bowling facts, we’d love to hear them!
Holiday season got you running around like crazy? Need to find your center? Channel the Dude.
Meditate on the following tenets as summed up on dudeism.com:
“From what is Dudeism trying to liberate us? Thinking that’s too uptight. To what state of being is Dudeism trying to bring us: Just taking it easy, man. By what means does Dudeism attempt do this? Abiding” .It really ties your life together, man. Turns out there’s a whole religion dedicated to the Dude and his meditative ways—Dudeism has 350,000 ordained priests who ascribe to the following manifesto:
“Sometimes you eat the bear, and, well, sometimes the bear, he eats you.”
If you feel like the bear’s eating you, roll away your holiday stress any day of the week at South Bowl, sip on White Russians, and let the hustle and bustle fade away for a while.
Check out this Binaural beats bowling league finals track link to keep you mellow in the meantime.
We're super excited to announce that Spring Leagues will begin in early January 2017 and teams are officially forming.
It’s time to take your bowling habit a little more seriously this year. South Bowl leagues are the perfect way to make friends, drink beer (if that's your thing), and take your bowling skills to the next level. If you didn't already know, South Bowl is home to a lot of different leagues that run throughout the week at varying times. Aside from the Mummers League and The Navy Yard League, every league is open to players of all shapes, sizes, and skill levels.
Feel like you might not have what it takes? No worries there...if you’re not a bowling pro (yet), all our leagues have a handicap rule that make each game competitive. Sound like something you’d be into? There are 8 players in each team so start getting your squad together!

See you on the lanes!

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 20th, 3PM
$25 Buy In (goes towards cash prize)
Ah, Thanksgiving...one of the worst holidays to be a Turkey but one of the best holidays to get a Turkey! Bowling three strikes in a row is not the easiest task but we've leveled the playing field for you during our Turkey Bowl 8 Pin No-Tap Tournament.
If you aren't an avid bowler you most likely have never heard the term "No-Tap Tournament". Let us break this down for you. No-tap bowling is a variation of bowling where players need to knock down at least a certain number of pins (rather than all 10) to count the first ball of a frame a strike. Scoring is the same as stanard bowling, except for this relaxed striking rule. In this case, the number of pins you need to knock down to get a strike is 8. Eazy peazy, right? Right.
So now you can see why we're encouraging all skill levels to come out and participate! Every one has a shot at winning the big prize! And speaking of prizes...
What's at stake?
1st Place = Winner takes all! Yep, all the money's. (The more players the bigger the pot!)
2nd place = Gift Card to South or North Bowl
3rd place = Bottle of Wild Turkey. Who wouldn't want that for Thanksgiving?
Most turkeys = Gets an Turkey! Peeps gotta eat!

One of the last (but certainly not least) steps to completing South Bowl was installing the lanes. We wanted to capture the amount of time and effort that goes into this process in a fun 4-minute clip! Just to put it into perspective, these 4 minutes really lasted 2 months! Here’s a look at the craft of installing, sanding and finishing 26 certified, league-sanctioned bowling lanes. Enjoy!
We have been lucky to host the Philadelphia Futures’ “Get in the Game” Fundraiser at North Bowl for the past 5 years and this year we were so excited that South Bowl was open in time to play bowl! This year it truly was “A whole different Bowl Game”. Raising over $175,000 and counting more than 500 supporters, including Phillies players, media celebrities and members of the region’s business community. The Get in the Game guests bowled in the tournament, participated in “Be a Phanataic” raffle, helped build Philadelphia Futures’ Field of Dreams, competed in a game on Non-Trivial Pursuit and were engaged in the evening’s live auction, selfie stations, and other fun activities.
Stay tuned for details about our 2016 “Get in the Game” Fundraiser!
